Max Strong aka ‘Salty Pete’ is Jenni’s partner. Jenni and Max met after he had just won the finals of the Tenterfield Bush Poetry Competition. He had been a contemporary and bush poet and English teacher for many years. Jenni’s passion for storytelling rubbed off on Max and after they had two children, he began telling bedtime stories to Tamlyn and Layla.

When Jenni creates a story it takes many drafts and retellings. However for Max, the stories of Salty Pete and his scurvy crew came in just a few retellings. He would also make them up as they drove to his farm and and as he spun his tales, the family could smell the salty sea and hear the sails flapping in the breeze. So the family begged him to tell them at Woodford Folk Festival, which he did and a few years later, he also recorded them. Max refers to his room as ‘Salty Pete’s room’ and it is full of old maps, paintings of ships, cutlasses, pirate props and books about pirates!

Max also has an alter ego as a performance poet. To hear him perform his award-winning poem “My Father’s Hat” for ABC Radio, click here.
